IN THE LINING OF THE FIELDS

Wood and metal sculptures

May 14, 2023 - August 14, 2023

Steven Careau’s current series of wall sculptures evoke the precise measuring implements of a draftsman or a builder. Carefully constructed using metal and wood, they float off the wall as multidimensional and elaborate framing devices. Designed to document some invisible energy field, their stillness contrasts with the forces that flow, vibrate, and palpitate through them.

His work has been influenced by both Suprematism, in which geometric forms navigate an idealized, gravity-free space, and Constructivism, which focuses on the utility and rationality of everyday objects. The tool-like quality of Careau’s work is directly linked to his father’s career as a pattern maker. Patternmakers fabricated wood forms used in the metal-casting industry. A vanishing profession, patternmaking was characterized most notably by the high degree of woodworking skill and exactness required.
